Are creating content, editing, and proofreading your writing driving you mad?
Martha L. Wharton, Ph.D.
I read writers.
Reads Writers offers proofreading, editing, and writing support that clarifies and polishes your papers, letters, blog posts, manuscripts, theses, and anything else you write. Whether you are a student, teacher, working in business, in academia, or writing for yourself and your family, you need a critical eye to review, suggest revisions, and tighten your text.
What is proofreading?
Proofreaders read your writing for misspellings, punctuation and grammar errors, sentence structure, document formatting, clarity, consistency, and style that cloud the impact, intention, and readability of your work. The content may be for any type of publication or presentation. If you are going to write it, say it, or show it in words, depend on the proofreader's review to make you look good and sound great!
Is proofreading the same as editing?
Proofreading and editing are related, but not the same.
Editors read for a broad view of your document. Is your language right for the document's purpose? Can the quality of the writing be improved to enhance the effectiveness of your article, blog, or thesis? The copy editor may rewrite sentences or rearrange paragraphs or suggest a new section to punch up your article's persuasiveness.
Proofreaders read writing after the editor's thorough review. Proofers are looking for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They get into writing "weeds". They are your last review before your written work goes public, viral, or to your intended audience.
Why is proofreading necessary?
One of the toughest things to do is to proofread your own document. You know what the document should say, and, of course, you see exactly that on the page. Nonetheless, your readers find typos, missing words, and punctuation foul play. You should have hired a proofreader!
Proofreading is important. You have a reputation to uphold, a point to make, and a grade to earn. Why undermine the quality of your work with sloppy presentation? Proofreading makes your writing look good, and makes you look smart and attentive to details. Proofreading helps you garner the respect of those who read your writing.
